Chandannagar’s jalbhara gets GI tag

On 26 June 2026, West Bengal’s Chandannagar Jalbhara (Jolbhora) Sandesh was awarded the Geographical Indication (GI) tag.

The GI tag officially recognizes Chandannagar in West Bengal’s Hooghly district as the authentic place of origin of this iconic Bengali sweet.

Jalbhara Sandesh was created over 220 years ago by Surjya Modak and his son Siddheshwar Modak.

The sweet is regarded as an inseparable part of Chandannagar’s culinary and cultural heritage.

Jalbhara Sandesh is distinguished by its soft chhena (cottage cheese) outer layer enclosing a liquid centre filled with fragrant rose syrup or nolen gur (date palm jaggery) syrup.

The GI certification recognizes the centuries-old craftsmanship and traditional sweet-making techniques preserved by the Modak family.

The recognition is expected to enhance the sweet’s authenticity, market value, cultural identity, and protection against imitation, while promoting the traditional confectionery heritage of West Bengal.
