Why in News?
The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has issued a red alert along the entire Kerala coast, warning of high waves and possible Kallakkadal conditions. Waves measuring 1.0–1.5 metres were forecast along the Kerala coast from 2:30 am on 26 September to 2:30 am on 28 September.
About Kallakkadal
Kallakkadal is a coastal phenomenon characterised by the sudden rise of seawater and the occurrence of high, rough waves, which can lead to coastal flooding, particularly along the south-west coast of India. The term is traditionally used by local fishing communities along the Kerala coast and has been officially recognised by UNESCO.
Kallakkadal is primarily associated with swell waves generated by distant storms, including strong winds and cyclonic systems. These waves can travel long distances across the ocean before reaching the coast, sometimes causing a sudden rise in sea level and flooding even when there is no local storm or strong wind.
