Indian Navy receives ‘Sanshodhak’

The Indian Navy has received INS Sanshodhak, the fourth and final Survey Vessel (Large) under a four-ship project built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd (GRSE) in Kolkata.

Delivered on March 30, the vessel marks the successful completion of the project, which was originally contracted in October 2018. The induction completes the series of survey vessels, following the commissioning of INS Sandhayak, INS Nirdeshak, and INS Ikshak between February 2024 and November 2025.

Role & Capabilities

Designed by the Navy’s Warship Design Bureau, Sanshodhak is equipped to:

  • Conduct hydrographic surveys in both coastal and deep-sea regions
  • Map harbour approaches and navigational channels
  • Collect oceanographic and geophysical data for defence and civilian applications

Key Specifications

  • Displacement: ~3,400 tonnes
  • Length: ~110 metres

Officials stated that the induction of Sanshodhak will significantly enhance the Navy’s hydrographic and maritime domain awareness capabilities, supporting safe navigation and strategic planning.
