Over 55,000 startups recognised in 2025-26

The Government of India has recorded its highest-ever annual recognition of startups under the Startup India initiative, with over 55,000 startups recognised in FY 2025–26, according to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

As of March 31, 2026, the total number of recognised startups has surpassed 2.23 lakh, collectively generating more than 23.36 lakh direct jobs across the country.

Strong Growth Trends

  • Startup recognition rose by 51.6% year-on-year compared to FY 2024–25
  • Direct job creation increased by 36.1% during the same period

About Startup India Initiative

Launched on January 16, 2016, the Startup India Initiative aims to:

  • Build a robust startup ecosystem
  • Promote innovation and entrepreneurship
  • Encourage private investment
  • Support startups across sectors and regions

Key Reforms in 2026: 

In February 2026, the government revised the startup recognition framework to further strengthen the ecosystem:

  • Turnover Limit Enhanced: Increased from ₹100 crore to ₹200 crore for general startup recognition
  • Introduction of “Deep Tech Startup” Category: Focus on cutting-edge and breakthrough technologies
  • Relaxed Eligibility for Deep Tech Startups:
    • Age limit extended from 10 years to 20 years
    • Turnover threshold increased to ₹300 crore
  • Expanded Eligibility
    • Inclusion of Multi-State Cooperative Societies under the Multi-State Cooperative Societies Act 2002
    • Cooperative societies registered under State/UT laws also eligible, subject to conditions.
