Smart Warehousing System for Foodgrain Storage

The Department of Food and Public Distribution (DFPD) under the Union Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution launched the Smart Warehousing System for foodgrain storage on 18 June 2026.

It represents the world’s largest deployment of AI and IoT-based technologies in public sector foodgrain warehousing.

The system has been implemented in:

  • 215 warehouses of the Central Warehousing Corporation
  • Additional 150 warehouses of the Food Corporation of India

The platform integrates advanced technologies such as:

  • FASTag and ANPR-based gate automation
  • Geo-tagged smart locks and intelligent access control
  • AI-enabled bag counting and face recognition
  • IoT-based environmental monitoring
  • AI-powered surveillance for fire, smoke, and rodent detection

The system supports ERP integration, automated reporting, and real-time analytics for warehouse operations.

Key expected outcomes include:

  • Reduced vehicle turnaround time (TAT)
  • Improved transparency and compliance monitoring
  • Higher manpower productivity
  • Early hazard detection
  • Real-time visibility of warehouse operations

The initiative strengthens India’s digital food management ecosystem and aligns with previous tech-driven platforms such as SMART PDS, Anna Chakra, Depot Darpan, ASHA, SCAN, and Anna Darpan, which use AI/ML to improve procurement, storage, logistics, and distribution systems.
