Trump signs order to rename Lake Ontario as Lake America

Why in News:
U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order on 27 August 2026 directing the U.S. federal government to rename Lake Ontario as “Lake America.” The order directs the U.S. Department of the Interior and the U.S. Board on Geographic Names to update the name in the U.S. Geographic Names Information System within 30 days.

About Great Lakes

  • Lake Ontario is one of the five Great Lakes of North America.
  • It is bordered by Ontario province, Canada, to the north and west, and New York, USA, to the south and east.
  • The five Great Lakes, from west to east, are:
    Superior → Michigan → Huron → Erie → Ontario
  • Lake Michigan is the only Great Lake located entirely within the United States.
  • The other four Great Lakes form part of the U.S.–Canada international boundary.
  • The Great Lakes are a major source of freshwater, transportation, fisheries, tourism and economic activity for both countries.
  • Trump’s order applies to U.S. federal usage; it cannot compel Canada or international organisations to adopt the new name. Canada has rejected the change.
  • The move has also raised concerns about the Indigenous historical roots of the name “Ontario.”
